SYLVAIN RODRIGUEZ
BIO
As a director of photography, I work across feature films, TV series, commercials, music videos and documentaries. I enjoy this variety of formats, which feeds my curiosity, encourages me to explore and keep growing. I also value meeting people from all backgrounds and exchanging ideas with directors about their perspective on a story.
Every story is a matter of perspective. Each film begins with a personal vision, and I enjoy helping to give that vision depth. This is a unique, handcrafted process: exploring the full range of visual expression together to serve the narrative and enrich its meaning. Every film is a unique emotional and sensory experience. It is up to us to find its language. This search, and the process of giving it form, are what I find so compelling.
Since childhood, I have been moved by the emotion a single cinematic shot can evoke : its visual power, its composition, its movement. From an early age, I was drawn to the way framing, the architecture of a set or the way light falls can express a point of view and stir an emotion. The balance of contrast, the nuances of colour and the texture of the image have shaped this sensitivity. This led me to explore the visual worlds of the filmmakers who left an impression on me, and the way their perspectives evolved from one film to the next.
After a background in science, I studied cinema and then joined film crews as a camera assistant. Working on set allowed me to continue learning alongside directors and cinematographers. At the same time, I began lighting my first films.
Today, lighting is a passion. Writing with the camera, the lens and light is a necessity for me: a way of searching, alongside each director, for a truth that belongs to the film and a point of view that brings it to life. This search calls for close attention to what the characters experience and how to convey that experience through images. I enjoy listening, questioning and offering ideas, in dialogue with the entire creative and technical team. Through these exchanges, we discover what feels right for the film, and each time, a new experience unfolds.
